Choosing your wardrobe for a maternity shoot can be overwhelming. I am sure you have spent a fair amount of time on Pintrest looking at maternity clothing ideas. I want to give you a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your outfit. While there are many beautiful dresses for pregnant women, not all will photograph well. So it is important not only to choose a dress that will flatter your pregnant body but also one that will photograph nicely. Here are my tried and true tips for finding the perfect maternity wardrobe.
Dresses: This is universally the most often style chosen by pregnant moms. And, not just any dress but maxi dresses. There is just something so flattering about a long flowing dress and it looks great on almost everyone. Dresses that are made to accentuate the pregnant belly are usually cut above your bump. This gives you nice waist definition and draws the attention to your belly. This is the focus of the photo session. We don’t want the attention to be drawn to your legs by an overly short dress. Don’t only look for maternity styles, often non maternity dresses can work just as well in a larger size than usual. This dress is gorgeous! I love the sleeves in this one. And this is the dress Rachel Parcell wore for her first maternity session with her first daughter.
2. Stick with Light and Neutral Colors: Choosing a neutral or pastel color scheme for your clothing will keep the image looking timeless and classic. Avoid patterns and busy prints in your dress. I love texture and lace to add interest. It is also best if the details are on the bodice of the dress not over the belly area.
3. Consider your body type: Not all bodies are created the same and everyone carries their baby differently. Choose a dress with sleeves if you are self conscious about your arms. Or add a beautiful cardigan to your dress if you can’t find a dress with sleeves. In general, form fitted dresses look better than ones without any kind of shape. So pick a dress that has a empire waist or if you are confident a form fitted dress can look beautiful. Just something other than a sack 🙂 This dress is gorgeous and I love the color!
4. Consider undergarments: Many times dress you will wear for a maternity shoot need special undergarments. Make sure you plan ahead by trying on the dress you choose and grab a nude strapless bra and underwear. Sometimes a nude fitted slip is needed as well.
5. Hair and Makeup: Definitely spend a little extra time on your hair and makeup. Many of my clients often hire their makeup and hair professionally done on the day of their session. It really does make a difference in how you feel and the final look of your pictures. Let me know if you are interested in scheduling a hair and makeup artist for your session. Don’t do anything that isn’t you. You want to look like yourself the day of your session. Maternity pictures are an investment that you will cherish for many years to come. Your babies will love looking back at pictures of when they were “in your belly!”
